Same as regular : The doc just added an extra destination structure to the common problem of gastroesophageal reflux. The entrance to the stomach is a loose circular muscle that may not fully close. The muscular mixing of food/acid pushes some upwards. That causes irritation where it reaches. Avoiding caffeine/nicotine/carbonation or laying down after meals can help. Your doc can also medicate you.

Hoarseness: L-P reflux usually causes hoarseness when the acid irritates the vocal cords. I agree with Dr F that management is same as other reflux, & the important thing is that the ENT Dr rules out other causes of hoarseness by looking @ the cords with the scope. If you are a smoker definitely need to quit ASAP along with the other measures.

REFLUX: "The root cause of laryngopharyngeal reflux is often gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. This disease occurs in both adults and children. Irritating acidic juices back up from the stomach into the esophagus and throat."
