A member asked:

An ent recently told me i have mild lpr. does laryngopharyngeal reflux cause cancer? if so, how likely is it? it seems like there isn't a clear scientific consensus on this?

Rare if ever: This pattern is not uncommon & can be helped by simple lifestyle changes. Avoid caffeine, nicotine & laying down after eating. (which increase reflux frequency) Reflux over time can results in Barret's esophagitis which is a known pre-cancerous condition, but it rarely does& can be monitored. Have some specific discussions with your primary doc on what is likely with your specific case.

REFLUX: Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is the retrograde flow of gastric contents into the larynx, oropharynx and/or the nasopharynx. If you have concerns about cancer consult with an ENT or Gastroenterologist for examination and diagnosis.
