Ask your doc: They did the scan to locate the IUD & its location. Your doc is either comfortable that it is in the right location or not. Whether or not s/he should remove/replace it with one that you could check strings on is a discussion you need to have with them.

The scan may answer : If the pelvic sonogram was performed by a skilled and certified sonographer and it revealed that your iUD is in its proper intrauterine position and you have no symptoms, you are OK and still protected from getting pregnant. The strings may slide down from your endocervical canal with next menses.
