A member asked:

Junior resident of ophthalmology performed goldman applanated tonometry on me with anaesthetic but without flouroscein. are my readings reliable? can eye pressure measurement in this method really be done without flouroscein use?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Eye exam : For this type of examthe anesthetic that is used to numb the cornea of your eye allows the examiner to place the instrument onthe surface of your eye without pain so that the measurement can be taken. It is reliable in experienced hands although there are newer methods to assess the pressure inside your eye. Fluorescein is not needed for this exam, only to see if you have had an injury to the eye
