A member asked:

My sister has down syndrome and a lot of psoriasis and i may have an oral herpes infection. is it safe for me to kiss her on the forehead/cheek? i am afraid of the virus entering where the skin is dry/broken. is it safe where the skin is normal?

Herpes I/II ?'s: Since herpes virus is extremely contagious, it is best to avoid skin contact as this could cause transmission to a mucus membrane area on the recipient (lips, eyes, etc.).

HSV: HSV can be transmitted to any broken skin. It can occur when you have a sore or not. Avoid kissing her anywhere there is irritated skin, and definitely never on the lips. Also avoid sharing toothpaste, bottles, cups and glasses as well as lip balm, lipstick or other items that come in contact with your lips and mouth.

No: The herpes virus is very contagious, so any direct contact with skin with an active lesion can cause infection. I'm glad you have affection for your sister, but there are other ways of showing affection, such as hugs and paying focused attention.
