A member asked:

Good morning, i recently had a covid-19 test because i'm having some painful flu-like symptoms, however, the test came back negative. i began taking ibuprofren for the past four days, but it hasn't been helping as much as i thought it would. what would you recommend to be the next step? flu-like symptoms?

Test for flu: Depending on the viral activity in the area you live, having a viral panel checked, including influenza may help. Best would be to start with your doc for an exam and detailed history in order to decide where to go from here. Not all flu-like conditions end up being viral in etiology.

Symptoms: I agree with earlier response. Did you take the test at least 5 days after possible exposure? Sometimes if you test too early- it may not show that you are actually infected with COVID 19. Getting assessed for other conditions would be prudent.

Different tests?: Some of the rapid tests can have 50-60 % positive results and miss numerous true positive cases with high false negatives. PCR is far more reliable, and knowing titers can clarify possible disease severity potential in some cases.

Agree with Drs. F&P: You may need to be tested for other viruses that cause flu like illnesses. It would be prudent to consult your doctor by phone for an initial evaluation and suggestions for further actions. Do practice preventive measures. If you develop breathing difficulty, do to the nearest hospital. Wish you good health!
