A member asked:

Would a hernia show up on a ct scan without contrast? upper r side pain and mild swelling; had gb out 3 yrs ago without problems. my ct came back clean but i'm wondering if it would've showed a hernia?

Not always: When trying to diagnose conditions of the abdomen, it is always advisable to do it with contrast if possible. Mild hernias or occult hernias can be missed with non contrast studies. A lot of times hernias can be diagnosed clinically with a good history and physical exam but when still not sure do a CT with contrast.
