Some people find colonoscopy easily tolerable without sedation, others don't. Sedation is common because it often makes the procedure easier and quicker -- otherwise it can slow things down in order to keep discomfort to a minimum. A middle ground may be no sedation, but an IV in place so instant sedation can be used if needed. Discuss with the clinic or doctor doing the procedure.
