A member asked:

Is it possible to have a colonoscopy without sedation for patients with psychological trauma related to sedatives? what happens during/prior to the insertion of the colonoscope when most patients would be sedated/asleep?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Colonoscopies are very infrequently performed without sedation at a patient's request and I'm told they are painless even during polyp removals. Most patients do change their minds and agree to conscious sedation though when spoken to by the anesthesiologist just before the procedure begins.
