If gfr went from 71, 55, 43, 34 in a year then the last test was 49 but protein in urine went up from 10 to 39.9. stopped 1 med and change to different bp meds. just curious which number is more concerning gfr or urine?

Both: Changes in both values are of concern. It is imperative that you consult a kidney doctor, nephrologist, for a proper evaluation to ascertain what treatment may be needed to prevent deterioration of kidney function. Do it at your earliest. Wish you good health!
