A member asked:

120/80 is standard bp. im 130/92 on 50 mg of metoprolol succinate. just started the meds. should my bp be lower than that? do meds take time to kick in? is 130/90 in a normal range? need these numbers lower so frustrating?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

130/90: The goal should be 130/80 or lower. I'm not a fan of using beta.blockers as first line treatment of hypertension unless the patient tends to have a rapid resting heart rate(over 80) or has known coronary artery disease. Side effects of beta blockers can be fatigue or limitation of normally faster heart rates needs during exercise, etc. My first choice is an ACE inhibitor & low dose diuretic.
