A member asked:

Do you recommend prescribing allopurinol for asymptomatic hyperuricemia for a 23 year old obese male having an 8.1 level of blood uric acid?

No med: As a pharmacist and physician, I am not in favor of using meds unless indicated. If Uric acid is elevated try diet control (eliminating foods that increase uric acid like rhubarb, spinach, mushrooms etc) to help manage.

Yes: If untreated, you are at risk to develop gout (hyperuricemia, uric acid kidney stone, and acute inflammatory arthritis) especially when you ingest excessive amount of alcohol, carbohydrate, or purine. Gout is usually prevented if uric acid level stays below 6.0. Also recommend to see an endocrinologist.
