Can my md diagnose me with the bruxism parasomnia, or does it have to be diagnosed by a dentist? i need this diagnosis, to for my insurance to cover a sleep study.

Specializes in Pain Management

Neither possibly : For complicated cases of bruxism, consultation with a psychiatrist is a good option. Psychiatrists receive training in sleep parasomnias and bruxism as well as other sleep disorders. They can prescribe medications, order the appropriate sleep study and make the appropriate recommendation or referral to another specialist as needed.

Yes, but....: Yes, but a dentist (prosthodontist) is a true specialist in function of the teeth & jaws. While your md can diagnose pain in your TMJ muscles, a prosthodontist can evaluate the signs of bruxism on your teeth, make the diagnosis, order the sleep study and work with the sleep centers findings to provide you with necessary orthodontic appliances to prevent damage to your TMJ & teeth while bruxing.

Either: Either can diagnose the condition. There are dentists who are proficient in sleep problems, but your insurance will probably act sooner with less question with your md. Ideally, they should work together.
