It is in & out of your system over a period of 4-6 hrs. Most prescribes sleep aids are designed more for those having difficulty staying asleep & linger for many hours in your system.

Sleep aid: If you're looking for a nonprescription light sleep aid, the antihistamine,diphenhydramine, at a dose of 25 or 50 mgs taken 1hour before bedtime,can be very effective without a morning hangover. I as well as many of my patients have used this medication at times and I consider it quite safe as well as mild. I hope this helps.

Sleep hygiene: Including balanced activities during the day with at least some physical activity, ideally outdoors, no tv or computer before bed time, light dinner hours before bed time, avoiding or reducing coffee and alcohol are only few suggested changes. Nights mirror our days and they are not all meant to be the same.

See below: I agree with Dr. Ferguson, however, some people are still very sensitive to diphenhydramine and it may last longer in the system. I would recommend that if you are taking this, that you try it first when you don't have to get up early or for work the next day, in case you are still sleepy.

A Power Walk or Ride: Good Evening; Two activities/ techniques that I attempt to practice before going to sleep are a good bike ride earlier in the day or at least a one hour fast walk around dinner time. Just before going to bed try a hot shower and take an concerns or worries and deposit them in your shoes for safe keeping. Then have a good nights sleep. Skip the meds!!
