Infection: One possible cause is an infection. Most likely this is an indication of a viral illness. If you note tonsillar swelling, white patches and/or fever, a throat culture may be useful. Check your neck for swelling. Monitor your temperature, drink fluids and rest. A throat gargle and soothing liquids may help. Watch for signs of facial pain and swelling.
