Apthous ulcers: Canker sores (aka apthous ulcers) can be caused by a variety of triggers: minor injury from dental work, vigorous brushing or sharp food, products containing sodium lauryl sulfate, acidic foods, diet lacking in vit B12, zinc, folate or iron, stress, hormone fluctuations. CS can also occur due to specific conditions: Celiac disease, inflammatory bowel diseases, autoimmune disorders or HIV.

Lots of things: There are too many possible causes to list here, many b benign and just annoying, some quite serious. Your recurring "ulce3rs" and your gum swelling may or may not be related. Sorry, no easy answer for this one. You will have to present at a Dentist's office, when either the ulcers, gum swelling, or both, are present for a physical examination.
