MRI: MRI can detect stomach cancer quite reliably, but I believe that a tissue diagnosis is required for definitive diagnosis before treatment and thus a biopsy is needed in the great majority of cases before an oncologist takes over.

No: As far as abdominal imaging,MRI’s are rather ultra specialized, not a first line for diagnosis, as regular studies such as x-rays or CT’s may pick possible tumors. If staging needed or specific organs involved, MRI’s can definitely play a role, otherwise by no means the first line test for diagnosis of stomach cancers.
