A member asked:

This is not about me. what is generally considered to be "life-threatening" in medicine? e.g. if a person has a terminal illness but could still live for 2-3 years, would this duration be said to be life-threatening or is it only months or days?

Terminal: Vs life threatening. None is indicative of the actual prognosis of time left. Terminal refers to the fact that the condition is expected to cause the patient’s demise with and without proper treatment, while life threatening refers mostly at acute or subacute situations that if not addressed timely and properly may result in death.

Terminology: I agree with Dr. Pasniciuc. I hope that no one will be criticized if they used the term-life threatening to describe a terminal illness. People often aren't aware of the exact meaning of terms that are used in medicine. Life- threatening is used when situation is acute.
