A member asked:

Good morning doctors. two questions. 1..if doctors can determine if someone has covid, why can't they use that information to stop it? 2..why is covid19 "staying around" longer than did previous viruses, like sars, h1n1...why can't it end like these?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

COVID-19: COVID-19 is a viral illness similar to influenza, except we don't yet have a vaccine. The virus will continue to pass through the population until we reach "herd immunity" where most people have anti-bodies from being infected, or a vaccine is developed. We know some things about the pathology of COVID-19, but not enough to have good treatments available. Hopefully that will change with time.
