A member asked:

There are conflicting reports online about getting tattoos and hpv. some say it's ok, others say that getting a tattoo when you have any form of hpv will cause warts and infections in the open wound. i would like to hear your opinion. hpv and tattoos?

HPV/Tattoos: Many cases of human papilloma virus (HPV) infections associated with tattoos have been reported. It is believed that HPV infection in tattoos is attributable either to the inoculation of the area from the tattooing process or the immunosuppressant effects of the tattoo inks. While the infection rate is not high, it is still a factor to consider when determining whether a tattoo is right for you.

Doubt it: HPV is a family of strains each of which live in/on certain skin types. The several strains that cause skin warts ( not genital) can move into any area of skin that would include where tattoos are applied. The tattooing process itself does not give you warts unless the equipment is contaminated.Skin warts are triggered when the germ is rubbed into normal skin, it does not require an open wound.
