Directly: The best way is to directly share with him that you are going through some difficult times and you would like to seek advice on some emotional issues pertaining to this. Yo will find your doctor very receptive and compassionate, .

Ask: If you are embarrassed that is normal. You might want to consider doing it via email if that is an option and it makes you feel more comfortable. Good luck!

Referral resources: Your doctor may or may not know community resources. Look up through your insurance provider. Unfortunately most plans do not have good coverage for psychotherapy, but you may not even need a direct referral.

Tell your doctor: how you are feeling and why you think seeing a psychologist would help. Most physicians will be more than happy to give you a referral to see a psychologist. They know it can help.

Directly: Your doctor has probably heard this question hundreds of times before. You might feel self-conscious about it, but that is okay. Ask anyway.

Be honest : Just let your primary know that you're struggling with some issues that you'd like to gain more clarity about and that you think talking to some objective would be useful.
