A member asked:

Is it okay to wait & see if bacterial vaginosis will go away on its own? i am breastfeeding & unable to take antibiotics.

No natural remedy: Bacteria are always present in the vagina, changes in hormones/acidity create an environment allowing for overgrowth of bacteria in the vagina. Diabetes/prediabetes/PCOS, can contribute. Previous oral antibiotic treatment, can cause the imbalance in acidity by killing lactobacillus, good bacteria . Metronidazole vaginal gel is likely best remedy, and safe with breastfeeding.

Best not to wait: Untreated bacterial vaginosis can have some serious consequences including pelvic inflammatory disease. Oral metronidazol is not suggested for the treatment of BV while breastfeeding, but there are intravaginal antibiotic creams that are effective. These spread less through your body and will not be in your breast milk as much. You can also temporarily suspend breastfeeding while on antibiotics.
