Many can: Some primary care providers are very comfortable and skilled at diagnosing and treating depression. However, some will tell you that they don't deal with psychiatric issues. Patients are often given written tests that when scored, can assist a provider with making a diagnosis. Ask you provider if s/he can provide you with this care. Be well.

Seek expert guidance: Your PCP may feel comfortable treating depression, But I would seek diagnosis from a fully trained psychiatrist. Once you are stabilized your PCP may be able to follow you on meds, But you want an expert diagnosis. No PCP has training to fully understand the variety of depressive situations and optimal options. there is a lot new for depression
