When to test...: We don't do blood tests on kids after they eat. If there is a big reason to suspect a blood sugar problem, we have some good screening tests, including one in which a person drinks an exact amount of sugar and then gets his blood sugar tested. That test is rarely done on kids. Getting the routine lab tests every 5 years with their annual check-ups is fine. An HgbA1c is added if high blood sugars.
