Red eye: You should see an ophthalmologist to diagnose the problem and prescribe the proper medication. The gentamicin may be ok but should not be used until a proper diagnosis is made.

Wait: Most red eye (conjunctivitis) are caused by viruses. It is probable that your red, painful eye is due to a virus. It can last 7-14 days. Cold compresses can help with the pain. Don’t wear contact lenses, and avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. It is not advisable to ever use leftover prescription medication unless directed by a physician.
