A member asked:

I had a tampon stuck for about 4-5 days against my cervix where i was unable to reach it. i was finally able to get it out, but am concerned whether i should seek antibiotics. the only possible symptom of infection i have right now is a bad smell. ?

Possibly: Retention of the tampon for that long does increase your risk of a cervical infection. I would just contact your doc & see if there is something OTC they recommend or another option they would choose.

May just resolve: Any “foreign body” in a body cavity (vagina, nose, ear, etc) can cause a reaction over time & a Gould odor, but this often resolves within a few days after removal. With retained tampon there is some risk of toxic shock syndrome - if you develop pain or fever you should call Dr immediately but otherwise ok to wait couple days to see if odor resolved. A mild douche might help clear the odor
