Among others: Allergies and postnasal drip are common at this age. Sometimes protracted recovery following viral infections may cause the same. Best would be to let his pediatrician weigh in if symptoms persist.

Hard to know: The possibilities include infection, allergies, drainage and a nervous tic. The process at that age can be a feature of Tourette syndrome. You will need to write down a good history of how this started & take it with you to a visit here your doc can start the evaluation process.
