Fiber, plant sterols: Foods that may lower LDL: 5-10 grams of soluble fiber/day (which may be found in oats, barley, or beans) bind to cholesterol in the digestive system and eliminate them from blood circulation. Foods that may raise HDL and lower LDL: 2 grams of plant sterols/day (vegetable oil, nuts, fish, seeds). Understand that it may not be possible to meet your cholesterol goals with dietary modifications alone.

Nuts good for HDL: Eating nuts tends to increase HDL (good) cholesterol and decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol. The effect is larger if triglycerides are also elevated. See this excellent review paper for more information:
