Can talk with doctor: In such situations, she can call her primary care doctor now to see if taking valacyclovir now can decrease her chances of catching HSV2, but it may be too late if the exposure was a few days ago. She might want to check her antibodies to HSV1 and HSV2 to see if she has either virus, one virus, or both viruses. If she has not caught HSV2, she can discuss valacyclovir some more.

Preventing herpes: Unfortunately, not much to do except keep your fingers crossed. Even with active sores, HSV isn't very efficiently transmitted, and "I think" makes it sound like you didn't have an outbreak or barely starting one? So she probably won't be infected. Be on the lookout for the earliest symptoms and if new infection appears to be starting, immediately start valacyclovir or acyclovir. Good luck!
