Follow-up with Dr.: If a person has results outside a reference range, she should see her doctor again to discuss the meaning of the results. The doctor must have ordered the blood tests for a reason. For ALT and AST testing, perhaps the doctor wanted to look at the status of the liver or muscles in the body. If they were just screening tests, many things can increase enzymes such as infections, medications, etc...

Imp. to monitor pro: Chronic alcohol consumption, drugs, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and chronic viral hepatitis are common causes associated with raised ALT and AST.If the AST:ALT ratio is greater than two, it is more suggestive of alcoholic liver disease NASH which also presents with mild elevation of ALT and AST.Worsening of fibrosis if seen on Fiber Scan , the chance of progression to HCC is 10-15%
