Ask ordering doctor: Question chopped off. It is better to have a high HDL and a low LDL. HDL is the good, and LDL is the bad cholesterol. Doctors want a patient's total cholesterol divided by HDL to be less than 3.0. A person needs to ask his primary care doctor to interpret lab results because a doctor needs to know the whole story behind the patient. In this case, a high good HDL may compensate for mildly high LDL.

Agree with Dr. K: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, you may need to lose weight, exercise more and cut out saturated fats. Wish you good health!
