A member asked:

Read an article that stated research shows radiation exposure from ct scans leads to increased risk for certain cancers, incl. brain cancer. i had a ct scan of head as a baby in late 1970s. should i be concerned? mom died of gbm in 2007, so i worry.

No, not even 3 scans: Patients get CT scans all over the world, every day. As long as there is a good reason for the scan, it is fine to do. If repeated scans are planned, to follow some sort of serious illness, a patient can ask her doctor what other options there are, in order to decrease the total number of scans in her lifetime. Having repeated CT scans, over and over, can add up to too much x-ray exposure.

Not a CT scan: It is unlikely that you had a CT scan in the 1970s, In any case the radiation exposure from imaging studies is unlikely to change your baseline risk for cancer. Have a healthy diet, exercise 30 minutes/day, drink plenty of water, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. For nutrition: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/. Get HPV vaccine. Wish you good health!
