Dr. or ER can help: If some cough is just from a mild cold, then the over-the-counter cold medicines are what people usually find relief with. However, some illnesses such as asthma, allergies, strep throat, whooping cough, and "the flu" also can have similar cough symptoms, but can be treated by a doctor with additional medicines. A doctor's visit or a trip to the ER is needed to evaluate a person coughing terribly.
