A 37-year-old member asked:
how long does it take the liver to recover from a very high amount of alcohol over the christmas period? thank you.

Dr. Donald Colantino answered

Days: I believe that if you have a healthy liver it can get over the effects of a heavy alcohol binge in a few days. However repeated binges can seriously injure liver tissue that leads to inflammation and eventually scarring(cirrhosis) after some years.

Varies: age, gender: Moderate drinking for an adult man is 2 drinks/day. Women are built different, metabolize different; mod intake is 1/d. Other factors re: liver health , e.g. Age, weight, meds, other drugs (get high?), infections, inflammation, heart function, nutritional status, duration of intake, can all add up.

Probably harmful: Alcohol is toxic to the liver. Depending on the extent of previous damage, the reason for the damage, and whether or not the liver was able to recover fully, alcohol could do real harm.

A 59-year-old female asked:
How long does liver take to regenerate after abstaining from alcohol?
1 doctor answer • 2 doctors weighed in

Dr. Frederick Shieh answered

Depends: Time to complete recovery depends on how bad the liver was hit by the alcohol. It could be as quick as a week or two if mild, to months if there is a history of liver disease. If there is permanent scarring, your liver may never fully recover. In general you can expect the liver to start the healing process as soon as you stop drinking.
