Life's not that way: The goal is to never get diabetes, meaning avoid excess carbs or excess sugars, and be sure to exercise. One's primary care doctor will do routine check-ups, and tests every 1-3 years, to check cholesterols and blood sugars. Only if a person gets diabetes, not well controlled, or for too many years, should there be big worries of complications.
