Strong risk factor: Hypertension is a major risk factor for stroke or a myocardial infarction. That being said, not all people with high blood pressure are guaranteed to suffer from a stroke or heart attack.

It can happen: Atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of heart attack and stroke, is associated with the following high risk conditions: hypertension, diabetes, smoking, hyperlipidemia, family history of heart attack or stroke. Untreated high blood pressure is very dangerous.
