A member asked:

Hi there i recently had sex and the next day went to the doctor and he recommended i take a 1 dose treatment of azithromycin to reduce chances of contracting chlamydia, is this going to increase my chances of getting antibiotic resistance?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Basics: People don't get antibiotic resistance....germs do. Germs develop resistance to antibiotics when they are not treated adequately, like when a person stops the 10 day treatment in 3 days because they feel better, or when they take a half dose. Many who take antibiotics when they have "colds" or other simple viruses increase the community risk of new resistant germs forming.
