A member asked:

Hello! i wanted to ask, whether doctors can tell, if you had mono (or were exposed to ebv) before through blood tests? could they see the inactive virus? thank you for answering

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes's and No's...: Mononucleosis is usually caused by EBV but can have other causes. There is no test for being merely exposed to EBV. The 4 commonly used tests look for antibodies, meaning they look for your body's response to EBV viruses that got into your body (not merely exposed to somebody who has EBV). It is possible to test for the virus or parts of the virus, but that is not a typical test for EBV or mono.
