Can visit Dr. or ER: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or flu virus (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as an abscess or acid reflux. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bad (as in this case), recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly. Some throat lozenges and Tylenol or Motrin can temporarily decrease pain.
