A member asked:

Why does the risk of ectopic pregnancy increase with age? is it because the other risk factors compound or is age alone a factor? im 38yo and 4w5d pregnant with my first. first doctors appointment is at 8w and im concerned about my risk.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Age, Tubal injury: As a woman ages, the risk of internal tubal injury from any infections increase along with previous pelvic or abdominal surgeries which can cause external pinching of the tubes as well as internal blockage from adhesions. These are all primary causes for ectopic pregnancy as well as a history of previous ectopic pregnancies which raise risks for a future one.
