Rescue inhaler: For shortness of breath acutely, Albuterol inhaler with a spacer is advised. This may be repeated every 3-4 hours ( 2 puffs per dose) as needed. If you still need the inhaler frequently even after restarting the Montelukast, avoiding smoke, dust, pollen , discuss a short course of steroids with your physician. There are also inhaled controller steroid medications for longer term use.

Not a problem: Montelukast (Singulair) is a once-a-day drug and can be taken any time of day. If switching from morning dosing to evening dosing, nothing strange should happen if a patient takes 2 doses on that one switching day. Montelukast is not a rescue medication because it takes too long to start helping (takes many hours), so one may still need his rescue inhaler.
