Several things: Breath odor can occur from: 1. Foods 2. Gum disease 3. Fungal infections 4. Tonsillitis problems 5. Esophageal/reflux issues 6. Tumors/lesions 7. Cavities, or abscesses you can prevent it by determining the cause and then targeting the appropriate treatment. Good question!

Gum disease: One of the most frequent causes of bad breath is gum disease. If you don't have a dentist you could go and ask them to do a complete exam and check for periodontal disease.

Systemic?: Bad breath can have many different origin , it could be as simple as oral hygiene and health or as complex as systemic diseases like diabetes or GI problems consult you dentist and primary care.
