Oral hygiene?: There are many causes of bad breath, the most common one being poor oral hygiene. You don't have to have cavities to have bad breath. Do you floss and brush after every meal, and use a tongue scraper 1x/day? There are also other dental and medical causes. Prevention's the key: Regardless of your cavity index, there are a host of other factors that come into play pertaining to halitosis (or bad breath.) regular cleanings and checkups deal with other issues in the mouth besides cavities. The bacteria that forms around the gums is of primary concern regarding gingivitis and periodontal disease. Proper removal is critical to reducing the incidence of gum disease.

Most common causes: The most common cause of bad breath is a build up of bacteria in the mouth. This can be found in the form of cavities, gum disease or on your tongue. A good thorough dental exam will let you know if you have gum disease or cavities. If you don't either of those, start brushing your tongue. Many people find their bad breath clears up after starting to really clean their tongue.

Its complicated: Bad breath, or halitosis, is generally caused by bacteria that form what are called vsc's, or volatile sulfur compounds. These compounds are what cause the odor and bad taste. There are many ways to reduce or eliminate bad breath, from mouth rinses, to gum and toothpastes. The easiest way is to remove the bacteria by using a tongue scraper. It is available at any grocery store or pharmacy.
