A blocked tear duct: Can take a year to resolve. Generally there is discharge from the eye but no necessarily redness. I would recommend having him rechecked or see a pediatric ophthalmologist.

Common finding: The drainage pipe for tear fluid is relatively tiny at birth and clogs easily. If you roll the tip of your finger over the inside corner beneath the eye, rolling nose to eye,you can empty material in the tear sac beneath.Do this several times a day and the drainage may improve. If the lids become red call in, eye drops may be needed. Discuss the issue at your next visit.

Drainage: h If there is yellow or green thick discharge, please have an evaluation for conjunctivitis. Otherwise, many newborns develop a blocked tear duct and most are treatable at home as outlined by Dr. Ferguson. Watch for signs of poor feeding or temperature elevation and continue to breastfeed.
