My one week old niece has a small swelling protruding below her rib cage it feels like a gland or herniation. please advise the possibility of what this could be.

Hard to be specific: The vague description/location makes it hard to be specific. Many times the tail of the breastbone will poke out in the middle just below where the ribs come together. If so it is normal. The kids doc can confirm/exclude this at any follow up exam. I doubt if the issue is anything serious.
