A member asked:

How do i know if food is actually getting stuck in the esophagus? versus the feeling that food is stuck, even though it's not

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Basic test: A food stuck in the esophagus will cause blockage. If you can swallow fluids, there is no blockage. The sensation can be triggered by a spasm in the structure, often triggered by a sore or irritation from acid reflux. The most specific way to demonstrate what is happening is a visual inspection by a specialized tube/camera passed into the esophagus. This is usually done by GI doctors.
