Different tests: The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) checks the electrical signals of the heart. The echocardiogram with color doppler is an ultrasound scan that looks at the anatomy of the heart and its motion, plus it can tell the direction of blood flow. Neither test is needed if a person is normal at her routine check-ups, and has no heart-related symptoms and no family members with special heart conditions.
