Depends on symptoms.: Treatment of an enlarged prostate depends on urinary symptoms. Drugs called alpha-blockers (e.g. Flomax) that relax the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, improving urine flow & symptoms. Another family of drugs for BPH are 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, such as Finasteride & dutasteride. These shrink the prostate & reduce episodes of urine retention. A urologist can help guide him.
