"perimenopase" ? : At 38, drops in estrogen which are more dramatic than those in prior decades of life can produce exaggerated symptoms of estrogen withdrawal as described (mood swings, hot flashes, etc.). Usually, another pattern involving higher stimulation of ovarian function to facilitate ovulation will establish another long series of menstruation, but with similar symptoms pre-menstrually and pre-ovulatory.
