Current AGA guidelin: This is an excellent question. I would refer you to this easy-to-understand link, which gives the American Gastroeneterological Association’s guidelines. Basically, the interval between colonoscopies depends on the cell type of the polyps removed and, your family history, and some chronic illnesses you may have. Tubular adenomas?: It depends on the pathology results. If you have pre-cancerous polyps such as tubular adenomas, you will need more frequent scopes, yes. If your polyps have always been hyperplastic, you wouldn’t need a scope til age 50 unless you have a first degree relative with colon cancer or pre-cancerous polyps, which would then have you start at age 40 or 10 years younger than your relative was diagnosed.
